Here’s Why

if God suffered as we do

God too would grow old

a late guest of the autumn wind

last night we heard his horse outside

at dawn no hoof-print to show

he ever arrived

if God felt like we do

God too would grow old

bearing the moon as a shield

sprung out from the palace gates

remembering the fallen

only to take their place

if God hurt as we do

God too would grow old

leaving our past

we travel alone

by the wild moon

someone faintly calling

a promise

unfulfilled

who’s life are we leading?

it doesn’t feel like yours or mine

we’ve been here

all this time

kept from heaven

prisoners of the winter wind

if we turn south

as the swallows fly

will we be forgiven?

if God suffered as we do

God would grow old and die
