A Winter’s Journey

frozen lands

two hearts on fire

leaving our breath in the air

yesterday trailing behind

count down the dismal time of months

since last I felt the soft grass under foot

hearing the great sigh of all things summer

this earth appears in alien apparitions

bare sky and barren land visions

soft echoes of familiar music

dilated by distance

growing dim with fancies

of rushing streams, green forests

today God’s world lay in slumber

shivering sunlit hills transfigured

with frost stretching to forever
